Is there anything your smartphone can’t do?
When compared to the humble watch, the answer is – quite a lot.
In fact, there are a lot of reasons why wearing a great watch on your wrist is a better choice than relying on your phone.
Many of these reasons have little to do with knowing the time.
A Watch Is An Image Of Who You Are
Any watch lover knows that you form different opinions on people based on the watch they wear. This is due to each watch offering you some silent clues about the person’s personality, lifestyle and, of course, their income. All of this information is sitting on their wrist for you to see.
The designing experts from Tierra Alma argue for this sort of accessorising. Being an online boutique, they are in tune with the season’s trends and statement pieces. They offered this exclusive insight, “when it comes to dressing up, you can’t go past a nice watch as an accessory. It’s subtle, yet could be what elevates that certain outfit”.
Now imagine if none of the people you meet wore a watch.
Instead, they pulled out their phone to check the time. This does not tell you much about the person which can be off-putting for many people. However, if they are wearing a watch, you will at least be able to tell if they have good taste in watches or not.
Watches Are Conversation Starters
If you see someone with a high-end watch out on the dance floor or in a more casual setting, the watch acts as a great way to break the ice.
All you need to do to start a conversation is a state that you love their watch and ask where they got it. If you do not know what type of watch it is, you could start off asking this while saying that it is a great looking watch.
Many people do not realise that this little ice breaker could be the start of a new friendship. It is also a great opener for back and forth conversation.
This is not something that you can do if someone is checking their phone for the time. Opening with stating that you like Android better than the iPhone might not lead to a conversation that both people enjoy as much as two watch lovers in full flight.
Search It Local Sales Leader, Jeremy Rorich, believes that watches are also conversation enders – in a good way. He explains, “in a professional working environment, smartphones can quickly become a distraction. From notifications to texts and apps going off, it’s easy to be distracted. With watches, you get all the benefits of staying on top of your time, without any excess chat that limits productivity.”
Watches Are A Great Gift
When you buy someone a high-quality watch, you know that they are going to be wearing it for many years to come.
Depending on the type of watch you gift, it could be passed on to their children one day. On the other hand, when you give someone a phone, they are going to upgrade in a year. They will not have the gift to remember you or pass it down to their children.
You Can Pass Your Watch On
While most people do not want to think about when they are no longer around, having a watch will provide you with something to leave to your descendants.
You could pass on your collection of beloved watches from father to son or to a loved one. They will also be able to look at the watches and remember the good times you had with them.
No one wants to think about leaving their iPhone to their kids in the future.
Watches Are More Durable Than Phones
When you have a sturdy watch on your wrist, you can crash through an obstacle in a race, dive into the ocean or just go for a swim in your pool.
With a watch, you can have fun without having to constantly check your pockets to ensure that your timepiece is still with you.
Phones are much easier to lose and they can often be found on trains, in cabs, at restaurants or on the street.
What you very rarely see is a watch sitting on the train after falling off someone’s wrist. If you head to the lost and found, you will see a lot of phones, but rarely any watches.
Local entrepreneur Pearl, of Pearl’s Creations, understands the need for a timepiece that is more durable than a phone. After working for years custom designing cakes she has come to understand that phones just can’t take the heat. She had this to say, “one thing I’ve learnt in my job is that phones don’t always belong in the kitchen. After using it for many things, especially as a timer, it almost always ends up with flour, baking soda or something worse on it. A wristwatch is reliable and durable, always there when you need it most”.
Phones can also drop into water or be flung by accident when you try to shoo away a bee. In these instances, bags of rice are needed to try and stop the damage to the phone, if the screen has not cracked beyond repair.
You will never see someone holding on to their watch and frantically looking for something to repair the damage done.
Watches Can Appreciate While Phones Do Not
There is a lot of coverage of watches that are rare or have some historical significance.
When these watches go to auction, they will be sold for very impressive amounts. However, you will never see an auction of someone’s old flip phone.
Even if you do have these auctions, the resulting price will not be as high as those watches.
No Hidden Charges
When you look at your watch, you can see the time or admire the artistry without any worries. The functionality and fun of your watch will not come with a monthly phone plan, roaming fees or surprise data costs.
You also never have to worry about your children using up all of their watch time or buying something online without you knowing.
When it comes right down to it, our smartphones help improve many aspects of our lives.
But there are also times when nothing beats a watch.
